Honestly, I’m ready for this election to be over with. Having a B.A. in Political Science, I enjoy discussing politics and generally love election night, watching the returns come in and listening to all the analysis of the exit polls. The joy I normally have during election season is not there, though. I’m to the point where I don’t want to talk about politics with anyone; my friends, my co-workers, or my family, and it bothers me.

Part of my issue is the way the media portraying all the candidates. Every media outlet has their agenda and is pushing it so much that it’s almost impossible to see past it all to get to the facts. I’m tired of “the best political news team on television,” and “fair and balanced.” Please, just report and let us, the voters, analyze and decide.

The other part of my issue is that no matter which way this election goes, like the last two elections, we will still be a polarized nation. We have two sets of candidates who love this country and want what’s best for it, but just have different ways of seeing it happen. People on both sides think the other side is evil and if you take a stance on a candidate, you are everything from a moron to a heathen. I have a pretty good idea of who I’m voting for in November, but I don’t want to say it publicly in fear of being ridiculed by people I know and love, and quite honestly, I don’t have to tell you who I’m voting for. Why can’t we have a healthy discussion without slandering those who believe differently than we do (I’m speaking to both sides here)?

Also, if I hear the words, “lipstick,” “pig,” and “bridge to no-where” one more time, somebody is going to get a beatdown.

Below is a clip from the September 10th episode of The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson. It pretty much sums up my thoughts (warning: language), and I think it’s about all we need to hear until the election.

I know you are all busy casting guest stars like crazy for 30 Rock and yeah, it’s probably gonna take you hours to get ready to meet Oprah, but still, could you spare some time to help out some loyal SNL viewers?

Lorne and co. over at Saturday Night Live are busy trying to figure out who they should get to play Sarah Palin, and the first person that popped into my head was you. (And I know I’m not alone in thinking this.) You’ve got just the right look, and with all your experience on the show, you could freakin’ nail this Veep contender. You wouldn’t even need to spend hours in makeup, you could just run over after you finish your day job and go to work.

This isn’t to diss the skills of any of the ladies currently on SNL. Casey Wilson or Kristen Wiig will probably do a fine job, but it just won’t be the same as you. Plus, we’ve been burned by the whole SNL seeking out the right candidate to play a candidate already once this year (coughcoughFred ArmisenasObamacoughcough) and we don’t want to see them make the same mistake twice.

So give it some thought, OK? Know it would be a lot to juggle, and we don’t want 30 Rock to suffer, but we’d also like to see SNL be good during an election year and you’d be perfect for this ticket.

Thanks for listening,
Richard

Update 9/13/08: According to the New York Daily News, it looks like it might happen.
