On the way home this afternoon, I was listening to Mark Packer’s radio show and he was talking about how The University of North Carolina can redeem this horrible basketball season, calling it The Road to Carmichael. The details are…

Go ahead and accept NIT bid.

Announce all home games will be played in Carmichael Auditorium.

Wear the silver bullet uniforms for the whole tournament.

Go old school… no air conditioning, bring back the “N.C. vs. Vis.” manual scoreboard, no ribbon boards, HD scoreboard or frills.

Most importantly, when UNC wins the NIT and cuts down the nets in Madison Square Garden, hang the banner in Carmichael Auditorium and NEVER mention of this season EVER AGAIN. “NIT… what are you talking about? We’re ready for next year. You want to see the banner? Go to a women’s game. The 2009-2010 season never happened.”

Can you imagine the sight? Carmichael Auditorium hot and rockin’ as the Campbell Fighting Camels come rolling in at 23-10 for a first round NIT game and get ran out of the building. It would be awesome. Dean could be on the sidelines for this event. It would be a great way to salvage the 100th season of Carolina basketball.

Let’s make this happen…

This morning on the way to work, I was listening to the local sports talk radio station and they were discussing how all the top teams didn’t need to look past their first round opponents. Even this afternoon, they were saying that UNC doesn’t need to look past Virginia Tech. All this got me to thinking and my response led to a firestorm of comments at work when I merely suggested that UNC shouldn’t care about winning the ACC tournament, but stopped short of saying they should mail it in.

<Ducks behind the counter until people stop throwing things at me>

Just hear me out…

Answer me this question? What does UNC have to gain by winning the tournament? Another ACC title? They’ve won the last two and where has that led them? Two miserable flame-outs in the last couple of years. What does UNC lose by not winning the tournament? Absolutely nothing. They will be a #1 seed and play their first two games in Greensboro no matter what.

Let’s look at a few other facts, shall we?

Only one time has a Roy Williams coached team won it’s conference tournament and made the Final Four… that was last year. This year’s UNC team is 27-3 heading into the ACC Tournament. The 2005 National Championship team was 27-3 heading in to the ACC Tournament. They won their quarterfinal game before dropping the semifinal game to Georgia Tech. After that, it was six in a row to finish 34-4 and winning the big dance. Also, I say it’s more important to have a healthy rested team, including not having Ty Lawson play at all this weekend and focus on the NCAA Tournament than to risk it all for another ACC Tournament title. The Heels already get to hang another championship banner in the rafters in the Dean Dome for the regular season, what’s the point of adding the conference tournament title? All that should matter is putting large banner number six with “National Champions 2009″ on it beside the one that says “National Champions 2005″.

If you don’t agree, that’s fine. I don’t expect you to. I’m just tired of hearing from all these taking heads about how UNC shouldn’t look past Virginia Tech or looking to playing this Sunday, because it’s more important to be playing on the first Monday night in April.

That is all… Good Night and Good Luck

Clemson 70

Look, I know Barack Obama ushered in a new era of “anything is possible” across the nation. Heck, the Arizona Cardinals are in the Super Bowl. Even NC State fans got caught up in the moment. One optimist wrote Wednesday morning, “With President Obama’s inauguration and a snowstorm coming…tomorrow just seems like it will be a different sort of day…Could it be a sign for a Wolfpack win in Durham?” We all saw how that one turned out. It was like watching Titanic — you knew the ship was going to sink at the end.

Like Wall Street tumbling after Obama took office, the cold reality of the world settled in last night when North Carolina took the Tigers to the woodshed once again.

Say it with me… 0-54, Clemson is a fraud.
